Samsung Added Screen Protectors to Galaxy S10 Phones After Issues

One of the first questions everyone asks when a new phone is announced is “how breakable is it going to be?”, and while it’s a bigger issue for Samsung’s bendy Galaxy Fold than its S10 line, people still want to know how smashy a new phone is before spending their money.

Up to now, the S10 has looked a bit dodgy smash-wise because some third-party screen protectors shown before the phone even launched had holes in them. That’s because the S10 and S10 Plus have ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint sensors, and they couldn’t read your finger through a thick layer of protection.

Samsung has now announced that all S10 phones will come with factory-preinstalled screen protectors. They’re not as thick as some of the third party ones, but presumably still offer some protection.

Preinstalling screen protectors is a common move from other brands, like OnePlus, whose phones always come with a removable protector over the display.

According to Slashgear, the protector itself will not be protected under the phone’s warranty, whereas all the other accessories with the phone will be under warranty for a year. Those accessories include the AKG earbuds and the phone’s charger and cable.

Samsung has also asked retailers to sell its own-brand screen protectors for the S10 rather than other companies’ products because they “cannot guarantee the experience with screen protectors made of traditional glass and polyurethane materials.”

In other words, if you buy a third-party screen protector, your fingerprint sensor probably won’t work properly.

We’ve had no word as to whether the cheaper Samsung Galaxy S10e will also have a screen protector preinstalled, but since its fingerprint sensor is built into a button rather than the screen, the issue isn’t there. Given the lower price and lack of specific need, we wouldn’t be surprised if the S10e doesn’t get one.

You can of course buy a regular case for your Samsung, of which the company offers bajillions, including ones that cover the screen.

As for the Galaxy Fold – we’re still waiting to find out what cases and other accessories will look like with this totally new category of phone, but we’re not holding out much hope for bendy screen protectors.
